Graphic arts: The art of mathematician M.C. Escher

According to other viewers, it remains an open question to them whether the graphic arts of M.C. Escher pertains to the realm of mathematics or to that of art. It is simply because perception of an individual varies depending on their insights and interest. If you are an artist, your perception upon any objects will be based on its artistic concept. Same with a mathematician, his perception will be according to mathematical point of view.

I am a math teacher who appreciates mathematics in many things and at the same time, I am also an artist. I do write, sing, draw, compose essays and poetry and creates work of arts using different medium. If I were to view the works of M.C. Escher as a math teacher, I can see various polygons. I would appreciate and perceive more the shapes, figures and solids as well as angles and measurements rather than giving emphasis on the context of color combination and its depth or meaning.

The polyhedral of M.C. Escher is a true representation of regular solids like cube, tetrahedron, octahedron and more. If I will analyzed the whole figure on the mathematics point of view, things that will first pop on my mind is how to solve its area, volume, perimeter, dimensions, etc. In one of this work - the Cube with Ribbons, Escher understood that in geometry of space, logic is necessary and likewise, the logic of space often determines its geometry that's why he applied the play of light and shadow on concave and convex objects. Therefore, it is concluded that the realm of his work is converted to numbers which replicates mathematics.

On the other hand, if I were to consider the artist point of view, works of M.C. Escher such as Circle Limit III, Snakes, Mobius Strip II and print gallery will be analyzed based on their color combination, depth, realism and concept. The right shades of hue, the graphical perspective of its images and the inner depth within it.

In totality, the whole concept of M.C. Escher's works can be perceived as truly an art of mathematician for Mathematics itself is an art. M. C. Escher combined his passion in Mathematics and Arts in his pieces of works. He is a genuine mathematician who wishes to convey his ideas and uses arts as his medium of expression. His works of arts involves its relationship to the fields of information science and artificial intelligence. It may be meaningless to others seeing basically different shapes but full of meaning to others who can relay these shapes to real life.
